Using data gathered in conjunction with the triennial survey of college faculty conducted by the Higher Education Research Institute, this study identifies personal characteristics and values as well as types of institutions that promote faculty engagement with a commitment to community service.  The authors discuss the ways in which faculty socialization, the faculty reward system and resource allocation can all be potential mediators of faculty involvement in service-related activities.
